Custom Redwood Pavilion — El Cerrito, CA

Natural Wood. Outdoor Comfort. Handcrafted Detail.

Turning Ideas Into Space

This backyard transformation was all about creating a custom redwood pavilion that would provide lasting shade, a beautiful focal point, and a space for connection. The homeowners, newly retired and looking to enhance their time at home, wanted a structure that blended

seamlessly with nature while upgrading the functionality and aesthetic of their outdoor living space.

What Made This Project Special

  • Thoughtful craftsmanship tailored to the clients’ unique vision
  • Fully exposed roof framing, columns, and rafters in redwood lumber

  • Redwood-wrapped concrete footings for a seamless, crafted base
  • Hip roof design with generous overhangs for all-weather protection
  • Stone paver patio integrated with existing landscaping.
  • Hand-applied coat of Penofin Natural Oil to enrich and protect the wood grain

What we were working with.

The existing yard was underused, with limited shade and no defined outdoor gathering space. The homeowners were seeking a design-forward upgrade that would enhance both function and resale appeal. Working in collaboration with one of our designer partners, we brought their vision—sketched initially as a simple concept, into a buildable, enduring structure that respected the home’s scale and the site’s natural elements.

Bringing The Vision to Life

This project was as much about legacy as it was lifestyle. The clients, a retired couple, dreamed of a place where they could relax, host family, and spend quiet evenings under a beautifully crafted structure. We designed and hand-built the pavilion using select redwood, carefully finishing it with Penofin oil to enhance the grain and protect against the elements. The hip roof and open framing added architectural interest, while the paver foundation and wood-wrapped footings grounded the space in natural elegance. Every detail was tailored to their personal taste—resulting in a timeless outdoor room that will serve them (and future generations) for years to come.

The Solution

We transformed an underused backyard in El Cerrito into a timeless, functional retreat with a custom-built redwood pavilion. Designed for a retired couple seeking comfort, beauty, and connection, the structure features open roof framing, handcrafted redwood details, and a hip roof for year-round shade. Set atop a stone paver patio and integrated seamlessly into the existing landscape, this outdoor space is both a lifestyle upgrade and a long-term investment.

From concept to completion, we tailored every element to reflect the homeowners’ vision—resulting in a warm, elegant space perfect for quiet evenings and family gatherings alike.
